Mi madre tenía una camiseta que ponía “Si piensas que no; di no. Si piensas que sí; di sí”. Y esto tiene que ver con la sociedad de hoy en día; no nos atrevemos a decir o hacer lo que queremos. Vivimos muy deprisa en un mundo globalizado y no tenemos tiempo para pensar. La ventaja de ir al monte es que vas al lugar donde nada te bombardea, lejos de la sociedad.
Suelo ir a los sitios que están más apartados durante el invierno, cuando las montañas están menos transitadas, para sentirme lejos de todo. ¿Quién no ha querido ser alguna vez Robinson Crusoe y explorar esos puntos blancos de los mapas? Cuando voy al monte eso es lo que busco; sentir que descubro nuevos lugares, nuevas formas de vida… o simplemente apreciar cosas que en la ciudad no valoro; ahí arriba no tengo agua templada, ni comida, ni estufa… Así que no es verdad que vamos allí a morir, como dicen; vamos precisamente a sentir la vida.
En la montaña te vuelves más humano, se crea una hermandad entre los alpinistas. No es que haya menos gente generosa en la ciudad, pero si ves a alguien sufriendo en la calle, te cambias de acera, porque “ya habrá alguien que le ayude”. En el monte no hay un ‘alguien’; si tú no lo haces, no lo va a hacer otra persona. Eso es lo que pasó con Iñaki, que todos fuimos ese ‘alguien’. Y, al fin y al cabo, la historia no sirve de nada si no hay nadie a quién contársela.

My mother had a shirt with the sentence ‘If you think no; say no. If you think yes; say yes’. This has something to do with nowadays society; we don’t dare to say or do what we want. We are living fast, in a globalized world and we don’t have time to think. The privilege of going to the mountains is the distance you take from all the media bombing, from society.
I use to go to far-off places during winter, where mountains are not so busy, just to feel I’m far away from everything. Who has not ever dreamt of being Robinson Crusoe and explore the white spots on the map? That’s what I look for when I go to the mountains; to discover new places, new ways of living… or simply to learn to appreciate things that in the city I don’t. Up there I don’t have warm water, neither food, nor a stove… So it’s not true that we go there to die, as people use to say, we go there to feel the real taste of life.
When you are up in the mountains you become more human, it’s like creating a brotherhood between alpinists. I don’t mean people are more shellfish back in the city, but when you see someone suffering in the street, you simply pass to the left side because “Somebody will help him”. But in the mountains there is not a ‘somebody’; if you don’t do it, then no one will. That’s what happened with Iñaki, each one of us was ‘somebody’. And at the end of the day, the story doesn’t mean anything if it can’t be told.
